Understanding the MATE Act and DEA Training Requirement

By: Matt Malacki
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has recently released guidance on the new Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act. The Act requires that all DEA-registered physicians and practitioners demonstrate that they have completed 8 hours of relevant accredited education on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
A One-Time Requirement
Once you have completed eight hours of training, you do not need to do so for future registration renewals. If you have already completed eight hours of training on the required topic, you do not need to complete another eight hours. The training does not have to occur in a single session and any previously completed training on a relevant topic does count toward your eight hours.
Who Must Fulfill the Requirement?
All DEA-registered practitioners must meet the requirement.
When is the Deadline?
The Act went into effect on June 27, 2023. Practitioners now must have completed the one-time education requirement before applying for a DEA license for the first time or to have their license renewed.
Medical Interactive Community Has Simplified the Process
Medical Interactive understands the burden this requirement places on DEA registrants. To make compliance easier, MI has created a package of courses that can be completed in any combination to satisfy the eight-hour training requirement. The courses include relevant topics including prescribing controlled substances, opioid use disorder, and drug diversion prevention.
